Privacy Policy
Download Subtitles from YouTube is a Chrome extension that downloads, copies, and translates YouTube subtitles. This page explains exactly what data that involves — what we receive from Google, why, who it's shared with, and how you can have it deleted.
Overview
Download Subtitles from YouTube ("the extension", "we") lets you download, copy, and translate subtitles from YouTube videos. Subtitle extraction happens locally in your browser: the extension reads the captions shown on the YouTube page you have open. Signing in and translation involve our backend service at api.downloadsubtitles.online ("the service"). This policy covers both the extension and the service, and the website at downloadsubtitles.online.
Google user data
You sign in with your Google account. We request only the basic sign-in scopes openid, email, and profile.
- We read and store
- Your Google email address and Google account ID.
- Available, not used
- Google's
profilescope also makes your name and profile picture available to apps. Our service does not read, store, or display your name or profile picture.
We use your email address and account ID solely to recognize your account, keep you signed in, and apply the free plan's daily limit. We do not use Google user data to train AI or machine-learning models, and we do not use it to generate images or any other content. We do not request access to your Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, Contacts, or any other Google service, and the extension does not access your YouTube account, subscriptions, watch history, or comments.
What we collect
Only what's needed to run the features you actually use:
- Account
- Your Google email address and Google account ID, obtained when you sign in with Google.
- Subtitle text
- The caption lines of a video, sent to our service only when you use the Translate feature.
- Video ID
- The YouTube video's ID, sent when you download, copy, or translate — used to enforce the daily free-plan limit per video.
- Usage
- Download and translation counts and character usage tied to your account, for plan limits.
- Local prefs
- Your session token and a one-time "rate us" flag, stored only in your browser via
chrome.storage.local.
Downloading or copying subtitles without translation does not send the subtitle text itself to our service — it's extracted and written to a file entirely on your device. Signing in is still required so the daily video limit can be enforced.
What we don't collect
- No browsing history beyond the specific video you act on
- No advertising identifiers, no ad network, no third-party analytics or tracking pixels
- No payment card details — we don't ask for or store card numbers
- No data from other Google services (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Contacts, YouTube account data)
- We never sell or rent your data to anyone
How we use it
- To authenticate you and keep your session signed in
- To enforce the free-plan daily limit and your character quota
- To generate translations via our translation provider
- To diagnose and fix bugs (for example, failed translation requests)
Google API Services User Data Policy
Download Subtitles from YouTube's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
In practice that means: we use Google user data only to provide the sign-in and account features described above; we do not transfer it to others except as needed to provide those features, to comply with law, or to protect the service; we do not use it for advertising; and we do not allow people to read it except with your consent, for security or abuse investigation, or where the law requires. We do not use Google user data to develop, improve, or train generalized AI or machine-learning models.
Retention
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account (see Contact), we delete your account record and stop retaining new usage data. Subtitle text sent for translation is processed to return a result and is not kept longer than necessary to do that and to prevent abuse of the service.
Security
All traffic between the extension and our service is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Access to account data is limited to what's needed to operate the service. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security — but we take reasonable precautions.
Your choices & deletion
- Sign out any time from the extension panel — this clears your local session
- Revoke access from your Google Account permissions page at any time
- Delete your data by emailing us at the address below from the Google account you signed in with — we'll remove your account record
- Uninstall the extension at any time from
chrome://extensions, which also clears all local data it stored
Children
This extension is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, note it in the extension's release notes.
